To say teaching children to ride kids quads is difficult is inaccurate…it’s difficult to teach ANYONE to do anything if they don’t understand, don’t want to learn or incapable of absorbing what is being taught. This is the same principle with teaching children and youth to ride kids quads properly. In fact, with knowledge, a little bit of patience, parents can teach their own kids how to ride their quads properly and safely, inculcating safe driving techniques and behavior.


Getting the right kids quad
The first thing you have to do is to get the right model and type of kid quad for your kids. This is not difficult if you have a helpful salesperson by your side who knows his or her stuff, but if you don’t, you can find loads of information on the internet or from magazines. Never let your kids ride on an adult-sized ATV because they are not equipped to handle a vehicle that size. So, the best thing you can do for your kids is to get them a kids’ quad.


Educate and keep them informed on how to ride, manage and maintain their own quad
Information is very important when it comes to keeping your kids safe when they are on their kids quads. Before allowing them to ride their own machine, educate them. if you don’t know how to, send them to classes where professionally trained coaches can help teach them how to properly handle their own kids quads.


Practice, patience and persistence
Kids get easily bored and frustrated…and it’s the same old story in this case. When teaching children to ride their kids quads, they might get a little frustrated and impatient with the many rules that they have to follow. But parents have to be patient with kids. During the first few sessions, as soon as the kids get a little tired, stop the session and let them rest. Put them back on the kids quads only when they are ready to do so…and if they are not, do it the next day.


But we cannot escape this fact…in order to ride better, we have practice hard. Trust me, the concept of practicing hard and being disciplined is often lost on a child…especially if they are young kids below the age of 10. The secret is in helping them see the fun in practicing and showing them very often how far they’ve progressed. Every time they get on their kids quad, praise them and shower them with compliments.

When you’re out cruising the trails on your ATV or dirk bike, it is imperative that you take great care to respect the area where you’ve been allowed to ride. Over the course of the last few years, negative publicity has come against riders of quads and other recreational vehicles as a result of those that did not respect the boundaries of private property. Many issues such as terrain damage, vandalism, and excessive littering have made land owners understandably apprehensive about allowing riders to use their land.

The first and most important guideline for riding on private property is to respectfully ask for permission from the land owner. Remember that he/she is doing you a big favor by providing a quality place to ride your bike. You should never ride on someone’s land without their explicit permission, and never ride on “assumed” permission. If you’re lucky enough to be allowed to use the land for your riding pleasure, be sure to honor the rules set forth by the land owner – for example he/she may not want you riding at certain times, or smoking on the land, etc.

Furthermore, you should always leave the land as you found it. For example, if a gate was closed when you arrived, make sure it is closed when you leave. Also, you should take any opportunity to leave the area better than when you arrived. If there is litter present, clean it up. Taking a little time to help out will show the land owner that you’re willing to make a contribution to the area and he/she will be more liberal about letting you use their land.

Tearing up the land by riding your quad or dirt bike is rude, and is certainly bad riding etiquette. Respect for the property of others should be your primary concern. You can reduce this by refraining from riding through some areas with softer terrain such as meadows, streams and certain steep hills. Along the same lines, it is advisable to also exercise caution if you happen to be riding on populated dirt roads. If you end up damaging roads, you could incur a considerable fine if you’re held liable to fix them. 

Respect for the environment should be a priority and extra care should be taken when riding through wooded areas. Plant and animal life is precious and carelessness can cause damage that is irresponsible and unnecessary. Remember, you’re riding in their world, not the other way around. Furthermore, if an area of the woods is clearly shown to be off limits, obey the signs and stay out of those areas. Observing these guidelines and acting as a mature, responsible, respectful rider will help you gain the trust of those who decide whether your bike gets ridden or remains parked.

You might be thinking of buying one and roll into the Great Outdoors. But before you fish for your wallet, make sure you know how check the thing before you cash it out.

Before moving any further, you have to admit upfront that money is really tight these days. From an economical point of things, buying a used ATV seems to be logical. Used ATVs don’t have to mean poor quality vehicles, but still, you have to do some mechanical check before cashing in on one.

If you really want to get your hands on a used but totally working ATV, you just need to follow these tips:

Scan the ATV for rusts. Rusts could mean that the vehicle has been heavily used by its previous owner. if you find rusts inside and outside the gas tank, the shock mount, the A-arm mounts, and the framed intersections, be wary of the bike. You might spend more dollars for the repairs than the price you will pay for the ATV.

Check the wheels. Raise the ATV up and move the wheels in all directions. This will allow you to see if there are loose ball joints and worn-out wheel bearings.

Look for dirt and water in the air box. If it does contain them, it is best that you look for another ATV as presence of these two in the air box can potentially damage the ATV engine.

For 4×4 ATVs, do some inspections on the gear lube and the CV joint boots. Dont purchase the machine if the gear lubes color is chocolate brown and the CV joint boots are not in good condition. Otherwise, you’d spend thousands to repair them overtime.

Lastly, look out for the small yet important areas of the vehicle such as engine, brakes, engine oil, shutoff system, handle bars and the lights. These things better be functional if you are to buy the quad bike.

If the parts are still in good working condition but are already too old, take note of them because they can be a reference point in negotiating the price of your soon-to-be ATV.

It has been reported that there was a dramatic fall on incidents of snowmobile riders harassing wildlife, venturing off limits, having accidents, violating speeding and safety precautions. A quad-bike is a small, all-terrain vehicle with four low pressure tyres, a seat and handle-bars similar to a motorcycle. They were designed for agricultural use, for riding across fields, rough tracks and open country. Engine sizes range from 49 to over 700cc and a high-performance quad can reach speeds in excess of 80mph.

Many quad-bikes are not considered to be road legal due to their being designed for off-road use. In the UK, vehicles must comply with certain regulations if they are to be driven on public roadways. In the case of quad-bikes, the requirements are a horn, headlights and a speedometer which gives readings in MPH.

Quad-bike riders must also carry insurance and the bike has to have a number plate and tax disc. Many quad-bike manufacturers produce lines of both off-road quad-bikes and quad-bikes which have been designed to be road legal. An off-road quad-bike can be converted to a road legal one, though the expense of adding the necessary equipment and full regulatory compliance can be taxing.

There is more to adding indicator lights to a quad-bike than just sticking them on anywhere. Lights have to be placed at the proper height and comply with the regulations covering their color and flash intervals. Since the procedures involved in converting an off-road quad to a road legal one can be complex, there are road legal kits now commercially available. These kits include reflectors, lamps and other necessary equipment, along with instructions on their installation.

A road legal quad-bike is officially classified as a quadricycle and is registered as a Private Light Goods Vehicle. The rider must be aged 17 or older and have a full car driving licence or a motorcycle licence that dates from before February 2001. There is no special training required for riding on the public road and the wearing of a helmet is not required, although it is highly recommended.

Since the lower end quad-bikes (those with 100cc or smaller engines) are typically designed with riders under the age of 17 in mind, they are rarely road legal. Since their intended users are too young to acquire the proper licensure anyway, there is little reason for these quad-bikes to comply with the legal requirements for on road use.

Lower end road legal quad-bikes include models like the e-ton Viper EXL 150 ST, a quad with a 150cc engines and the Apache RLX 200S, which features an automatic transmission and an 180cc engine.

On the other end are far more powerful road legal quad-bikes, with models being able to achieve speeds of more than 80 mph; though it should be noted that the maximum speed permitted for use on roads is 20 mph. The Yamaha Raptor YFM700R is one such model with a high performance, lightweight aluminum frame and impressive 686cc piston. There are also slightly smaller sport quads for road use including the Quadzilla 450, with a 448cc engine.

Despite being designed for off-road use it was inevitable that quad-bikes would find their way onto the public highway, both for convenience and for fun. But it is important to be aware that not all quad-bikes are built as road-legal and therefore care must be taken before driving a quad on the road.
