quad bikes1 A Day Out Quad Biking in Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt is becoming more and more popular each year, Simply because of the all year round good weather and the things to do while you are there from exploring the stunning Coral reefs to visiting biblical treasures like St Katherines monastery and Moses Mountain.

One of the most exciting things to do is Quad biking in the Sinai desert. Standard Quad biking trips in Sharm last around two hours and they start off either in the late afternoon or in the early hours of the morning. This so you can see the beautiful sunsets and sunrises. These two hour trips are ok if you want to go in large groups and be a movie star for the day as you are on video. There is an alternative and that is an all day personal Quad trip through the interior of the Sinai desert.

If you want something a little more challenging and adventurous then these personal trips are for you. These all day adventures do cost more the standard Quad biking trip but they are well worth the extra money. If you can find a good tour agent who you can trust then you can negotiate a good deal, these special trips are not standard so will have to be negotiated.

Tour agents can be found all over Sharm El Sheikh, Naama Bay is a good starting place, hotels are third party so will be more expensive as they will take a commission. Sharks Bay is also worth trying.

When you do find a good deal then you will need to be equipped for your trip, you will need ruck sack, plenty of bottled water scarf and goggles or good pair of sunglasses to protect you from the sand and dust. A good thick scarf’s can be bought from the many souvenir shops the black and white checked type. You will also need to take snorkelling gear with you, although you can hire these on the morning of your trip in Naama Bay and guys wear tight underwear I‘ll explain a little later.

The Quad bikes can take two people, you will have been asked if you wanted to go solo or double at the arranging stage of your trip. Quad biking in the desert is a reasonably safe sport but accidents can happen, the bikes do go fast and over rough terrain,

so care must be taken.

Your Quad biking adventure starts with your pick from your hotel or apartment and taken to the Quad biking base situated in Naama bay. This is were most Quad biking trips start from. On arrival one of the organisers will help you put your scarf on and eye protection if you have trouble putting scarf on. After a quick safety check of the Quad bikes its time to set off.

Coming out of the Quad base leads out to the public roads which you travel on for a short while to get you into the Sinai desert. once into the desert you really do get magnificent views of the Sinai Mountains and the ever changing colours of the rock faces.

The surface of the desert is very course and bumpy so guys this is why tight underwear is going to be a bit more comfy.

You will travel towards Nabq bay and on to Nabq Nature Reserve or the official name of the Nabq Protectorate, this area is unspoilt by the masses of tourists, the area provides the perfect habitat for the fish and Birds, also home to animals such as Gazelle, Rock Hyraxes, and Desert Fox. There is an entrance fee to the protectorate but this should be in the price of the trip.

When you arrive in the park you will notice that some areas are fenced off this is for your safety as there are still unexploded mines from the second world war in the Sinai. Never go off the tracks.

Your first stop brings you to the mangroves these are the most northerly mangrove forests in the world. Here near the shore line you are met by Bedouin villagers selling little gifts and trinkets. Bedouin people are very poor and rely on tourism for there main source of income. After meeting the Bedouins you can have a swim or snorkel in the beautiful aqua sea of the Nabq protectorate.

After your swim or snorkel lunch is served in the Bedouin tent, On the menu is a fish and rice dish followed with refreshments.

after lunch and a rest you can go for another swim or snorkel in the sea.

From the beach coastline you will start to head back towards the Quad bike base in Naama Bay, but you do have another stop on the way back at a Bedouin tent for refreshments. When you arrive back at base you are taken back to your hotel or apartment.

The all day Quad bike adventure starts around 8:00 in the morning and finishes around 3:00 in the afternoon. Things you will need with you are rucksack or Bag for carrying your water snorkel gear, towel, and face protection scarf and goggles. You will also need to take your passport for entrance to the nabq protectorate.

You can enjoy quad biking around La Manga, Spain, as an experienced rider or a novice. Once you learn the ropes, you can have a great time riding alone or with your family and friends. Be prepared to enjoy speed, mud, jumps and off-road challenges based on your expertise. If you prefer to slide and skid through mud and over jumps, indulge yourself. If you would rather take it easy and enjoy the scenery, then just take things at your own pace. La Manga quad biking offers rides for all experience levels.

The Quad Bike

The quad bike is basically an engine-powered quadracycle. It is a four-wheeled motor bike that is straddled by the rider. Many of the safety concerns related to quad bikes are highly dependent on the skill and responsibility level of the rider.

The quad bike was originally designed for road use as a form of horseless carriage. In the early 20th century, the quad bike was redesigned and improved for rough terrain and to move through water. In the 1970s, a top motorcycle manufacturer began designing quad bikes based on the features of its motorcycles. This began the popular off-road use of today’s quad bikes. Today’s quad bikes are lighter in weight and designed to use in off-road situations that would be difficult for larger vehicles.

La Manga Quad Biking

Why not spend the day quad biking up and down the hills, through the forests and across the fields of La Manga? Enjoy a fun and exciting way to view scenery, play hard, enjoy fresh air and even get a little exercise. You can rent quad bikes from various locations.

When you arrive for your quad biking experience, you will be given detailed information regarding rules and safety procedures. The bikes are legal on the roads in Spain, but proper safety gear must be worn to comply with local laws. Your equipment should consist of a helmet, goggles and waterproof clothing to wear over your own clothes.

If you prefer, you can request more detailed instructions and training and reserve a guide for your quad biking excursion. After your briefing, you can hop on your bike and begin familiarizing yourself with the controls and the feel of the machine. Your instructor will guide you through everything you need to know to have a safe and enjoyable experience. Once your training is completed, you will be off on your adventure. It is best to do a little homework before renting your quad bike to find out where the best trails are. The Portman Guns and the Calablanque National Park are known as very enjoyable riding areas.

Riders must be at least 16 years of age or have parental consent. If you have children that are old enough to ride on smaller machines, La Manga has junior quad biking as well. All riders must be in reasonably good health and able to climb on and off the vehicle without difficulty. Included in the standard rental is:

* Use of the quad bike

* Safety equipment

* Full instruction and training in using the quad bikes

* Typical rental time of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours

I have been researching quad biking adventures for my planned trip to the West Coast of New Zealand this Summer. Seems there are a great many quad biking outfits around the country. I came across these folks that do adventure tours like jetboating and such. One of their packages is a quad bike trip which appears to be heaps of fun. A youtube video (follow link above) came up on my google search and they have a website with some cool clips there too.

While I am an extreme sport sort of person, I have a bit of hesitation doing the quad biking. This is because when I was mountain biking a few years ago, I took a wrong turn on a trail and went over the handle bars. When I tried to get up, my arm felt really strange. A friend observed me standing up straight, and out of my right shoulder was a pointy bit of bone poking through the skin. It was my collar bone broken in two!

Interestingly, it should have been excruciating pain. But it felt more “uncomfortable” than anything else. My friend looked as pale as a white horse, so apparently it adversely effected him more than me. Fortunately he had a cellphone, so he rang an ambulance and it came to pick me up.

It took me 2 years to get back on a bike because I remained somewhat paranoid about a recurring debacle. The collarbone wouldn’t heal, either, and required a general anesthetic surgery to screw a metal plate into my body – securing the bones so they would re-fuse. I didn’t get the plate removed for an entire year. It even set off the metal detector once when I went through LAX. What a hoot!

So, here I am, ready for some new extreme. Quad biking and jet boating adventure tours are the next logical steps to get my courage back up, and then perhaps I will graduate to more dangerous endeavours.

Gosh, I so love being human.

A quad-bike is a small, all-terrain vehicle with four low pressure tyres, a seat and handle-bars similar to a motorcycle. They were designed for agricultural use, for riding across fields, rough tracks and open country. Engine sizes range from 49 to over 700cc and a high-performance quad can reach speeds in excess of 80mph.

Many quad-bikes are not considered to be road legal due to their being designed for off-road use. In the UK, vehicles must comply with certain regulations if they are to be driven on public roadways. In the case of quad-bikes, the requirements are a horn, headlights and a speedometer which gives readings in MPH.

Quad-bike riders must also carry insurance and the bike has to have a number plate and tax disc. Many quad-bike manufacturers produce lines of both off-road quad-bikes and quad-bikes which have been designed to be road legal. An off-road quad-bike can be converted to a road legal one, though the expense of adding the necessary equipment and full regulatory compliance can be taxing.

There is more to adding indicator lights to a quad-bike than just sticking them on anywhere. Lights have to be placed at the proper height and comply with the regulations covering their color and flash intervals. Since the procedures involved in converting an off-road quad to a road legal one can be complex, there are road legal kits now commercially available. These kits include reflectors, lamps and other necessary equipment, along with instructions on their installation.

A road legal quad-bike is officially classified as a quadricycle and is registered as a Private Light Goods Vehicle. The rider must be aged 17 or older and have a full car driving licence or a motorcycle licence that dates from before February 2001. There is no special training required for riding on the public road and the wearing of a helmet is not required, although it is highly recommended.

Since the lower end quad-bikes (those with 100cc or smaller engines) are typically designed with riders under the age of 17 in mind, they are rarely road legal. Since their intended users are too young to acquire the proper licensure anyway, there is little reason for these quad-bikes to comply with the legal requirements for on road use.

Lower end road legal quad-bikes include models like the e-ton Viper EXL 150 ST, a quad with a 150cc engines and the Apache RLX 200S, which features an automatic transmission and an 180cc engine.

On the other end are far more powerful road legal quad-bikes, with models being able to achieve speeds of more than 80 mph; though it should be noted that the maximum speed permitted for use on roads is 20 mph. The Yamaha Raptor YFM700R is one such model with a high performance, lightweight aluminum frame and impressive 686cc piston. There are also slightly smaller sport quads for road use including the Quadzilla 450, with a 448cc engine.

Despite being designed for off-road use it was inevitable that quad-bikes would find their way onto the public highway, both for convenience and for fun. But it is important to be aware that not all quad-bikes are built as road-legal and therefore care must be taken before driving a quad on the road.
